On Friday, March 9, Faith Christian School (FCS) kindergarten and elementary students participated in the American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. Since 1978 Jump for Heart has been generating funds to help the American Heart Association support lifesaving research and educational programs. Millions of students nationwide have participated in this fun-filled event that combines fundraising with learning the importance of heart-healthy habits. FCS students exceeded their goal of doubling their contribution from the previous year, raising more than $1700. As a result, the American Heart Association is donating $200 to the Physical Education Department at FCS. Coach Joseph Douglas led the students in various jumps including, double dutch, speed, bell, single, and figure-eights. Third grade raised the most funds overall, while fourth grader, Julianne Townsend, raised the most funds as an individual.

Beloved children’s book author, Dr. Seuss, would have turned 108 on Friday, March 2. Faith Christian School elementary level kicked off its celebration of the occasion on Thursday, March 1, with a book character dress up day. Students and faculty were invited to attend school dressed as a book character, though not necessarily Dr. Seuss characters. Cats in Hats, Things One and Two, and Cindy Lou Whos were among the many characters to be found on campus. Students dressed as characters representing a host of other books read as they participated in the “Read the Most from Coast to Coast” Accelerated Reader Quiz-taking challenge. Random prize drawings included an Apple iPad, a signed copy of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” authored by Jeff Kinney, and several book packages donated by publishers sponsoring this national event. All elementary students were winners as the birthday celebration stretched into Friday with special treats and crafts resembling characters and ideas from traditional Dr. Seuss books. A hand/foot book was created, while students munched on red and white Twizzler and marshmallow hats along with One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, and Blue Fish treats. Sincerest appreciation to Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) for sharing his talents and merriment, and proving that reading is not just educational but also fun for all who participate.

On February 18th, the Faith Christian School (FCS) fifth grade class donned their finest monkey attire in preparation to Storm the Citadel. With a theme of Banana Bonanza, Mrs. Lisa Maxwell (teacher/coach), Victoria Maxwell (assistant coach) and eleven members of her fifth grade class participated in the Storm the Citadel trebuchet competition sponsored by Google and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Center. Teams from schools, colleges and various corporations were provided a range of distances where the goal was set, and teams were challenged to construct and test their trebuchets to determine the level of counterweight required to make their ballistic travel the distance. Teams utilized mathematics they had calculated in testing to throw their ballistic the correct distance. This was the first year the competition was open to elementary teams.

Trophies were awarded for Accuracy and Team Spirit. Accuracy trophies were earned by hitting the target. Team Spirit trophies were earned by costuming, trebuchet decoration, cheers, sportsmanship, respect for other teams and officials, teamwork, and attitudes.

With eight teams competing in the elementary classification, Faith Christian School Fifth Graders won First Place in Spirit and Third Place in Accuracy. Faith Christian School is located in Summerville and has a current enrollment of 255 students.
